Self Therapy

Self-perception includes an individual's characteristics, temperament, perceptions and definitions of who they are. It is the perception of personality that undergoes many changes during the developmental period starting from childhood. Within these changes, if the individual can remain in a solid relationship with his/her body and mind, he/she becomes a being who can adapt to external and internal conditions and realize his/her psychological resilience.

Weak self-perception

If the self-concept is not strong, the person may experience problems with emotions and moods. In these cases, people with a weak sense of self may have difficulty gaining a place in society, strengthening their relationship with themselves and establishing a relationship with the outside world.

Psychological research on this topic generally examines the developmental processes of children. The understanding of the self begins at the age of 2, when the baby first recognizes its physical body. For example, our perception of the body begins with the perception of hands and fingers and then develops to include the whole body. Interestingly, babies never perceive that their body has a form with boundaries. For this reason, psychological experiments investigating self-perception suggest that the use of mirrors can help the child to recognize and objectify his or her body. They enable babies to distinguish themselves from others and to see themselves as they see others. What is important here is that until a certain age, the formation of self-perception goes through a lot of psychological questioning and uncertainty.

Strong self-perception

An individual who is able to use his or her sense of self robustly and effectively experiences his or her self-worth objectively, recognizing his or her abilities and inadequacies, strengths and flaws. Although we tend to see ourselves as isolated beings existing in our minds and bodies, we do not exist in isolation. We exist interactively, and in this interactive existence we find our own self and are in harmony with it if we are able to adapt to the changing perception of self. By understanding and seeing others, we have the chance to both separate ourselves from others and to group with others.

How can self-perception be created?

Self-perception occupies a significant place in our journey of awareness. Here are a few of the various elements we can pay attention to when building our sense of self:

Our behavioral patterns: our repetitive and fixed behaviors,

Our reactions to events and the effects we have on others,

Our habits; our thoughts and behaviors,

Our fears: fear of losing, fear of not being loved, fear of loneliness, fear of failure and so on,

Observing and recognizing all these elements in our daily lives can help us to create a sense of self.
